What is difference between Suri alpaca and Huacaya alpaca fibers?
- Huacaya alpacas are more common and their fibers are widely used in the global market, where the Suri alpaca world population is way smaller at 20%, thus more expensive as a fiber.
- Huacaya alpaca fleece is more like sheep’s wool: soft, fluffy, and crimpy, thus giving it some elasticity. Suri Alpaca fibers are very fine, silky, straight, and has no crimp. Due to structural differences, Suri fibers are more difficult to dye than Huacaya fibers.
